Keeneland SeeBlue DanceBlue Day

seeblue

KeenelandFriday October 22, 2010 was this year's SeeBlue DanceBlue day at Keeneland racetrack. University of Kentucky students, alumni and faculty all went out to a day at the races to support the university as well as DanceBlue. Hats were provided by Keeneland and sold to patrons, and all proceeds were donated directly to DanceBlue. Additionally, former UK football player and current Colts player, Jacob Tamme, was present at the booth to sign the hats and promote DanceBlue.

This event was a great fundraiser for DanceBlue. We all had a blast talking to UK alumni about the philanthropy and got a very positive response from those who didn't know about DanceBlue and wanted to get involved with the event.

What is the line dance?

Linedance

Every hour on the hour DanceBlue participants dance in a 10-minute long line dance to kick-off each themed hour of dancing. All dancers learn the dance together at the start of the marathon. Then the line dance remains the same throughout the night and all dancers gather on the dance floor to do the line dance together each hour. The line dance signifies our commitment to dancing for 24 hours and reenergizes everyone. The themed hours of dancing, which begin after the line dance is completed, gives dancers the opportunity to socialize, eat, play games and disperse throughout Memorial Coliseum. But when the top of the hour approaches, all dancers congregate in the main area to do the line dance and show the kids and their families that we truly are committed to dancing for them.

Why I DanceBlue

DanceBlue is an amazing experience for everyone involved. Here are a few stories of why Kat Flynn the Operations Chair and Katie Foxworth the Programming Chair got involved in DanceBlue:

One thing that I have gained from volunteering at the clinic and hanging out with the DanceBlue families at festivities much like the one that we just had, is a sense of joy. These children are truly an inspiration. Just being able to watch them interact with one another and with us, they have a gravitating happiness about them that you can't help but want to be around them. One little princess sticks out to me as she playfully hopped with her candy from one craft station to the next... (Continued - Click Read more below)

Fall Festival

We just had our extremely fun annual Fall Festival! There were princesses, bees and ladybugs, and the Harry Potter characters even made a special showing to this event! I first want to send a special thank you to our Family Relations Team. They did an absolutely wonderful job of organizing and making this memorable event even possible. It is not everyday that you get to dress up in your favorite costume, eat candy and enjoy making crafts next to kids that inspire you. Thank you families for spending your Halloween Saturday with us!

DanceBlue Mission

It is the mission of the University of Kentucky Dance Marathon, DanceBlue, to create a multi-faceted organization that operates through the support and leadership of the UK students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the Lexington community. The organization enhances the lives of children and families suffering from childhood cancer through the Golden Matrix Fund, and therefore serves the Bluegrass by assisting those treated at the University of Kentucky Pediatric Oncology Clinic.
